February 2010 News

February 1, 2010

Now the festive season is over its time to get the lawn and garden back into shape. Lawns sometimes take a battering during January and February is a good time to get lawns to a strong and healthy state before autumn arrives.

After a very hot and dry month around Australia, in particular the southern states, it is time to do some recovery work.

February is a great time for fertilising and an occasional deep watering.  The main aim in February lawn maintenance is to have a green lush and healthy lawn by the end of summer in preparation for the cooler months ahead.  A healthy lawn at the end of summer makes for a better lawn in winter.

If you’re in tropical Australia, or areas of days regularly above 36 degrees, then delay the February tips until March.

If you live in an area that is prone to Army worm attack, keep your eye out as they can be around still in February.

January 2010 News

January 1, 2010

Happy New Year and let’s hope it’s another great year for your Sir Walter Lawn.

January can be a very hot and dry month around Australia in particular in the western areas.  It’s that time of year when you have to make the decision,

  1. Do I want to keep my lawn alive?  or
  2. Do I want to keep my lawn lush and green?

If you just want to keep your lawn alive without being too worried about maintaining it to a lush and green standard then put your feet up in January and almost forget about your lawn. In most parts of Australia the odd shower will be all your lawn will need, (except places like Perth) and don’t be too worried if it loses a bit of colour after a heat wave, it will recover. Unless you are going to water your lawn, don’t fertilise it in January. So sit back and let nature take its course and don’t worry too much about colour loss after hot days.

If you want to keep your lawn lush and green then January is the time to pay attention to a few things. Be sure that your lawn receives one deep watering per week (more in climates like Perth) and after a heat wave water your lawn late evening or early the following morning. Apply Sir Walter lawn fertiliser in January at the rate on the label and be sure to water in well.  With Sir Walter you can have a lush green lawn all year round, but remember it can be a hot month so be prepared to apply a bit of water and fertiliser to maintain that lush green look.

If you live in an area that is prone to Army worm attack keep your eye out as they can be around in January.
