Article from "August 2006" Issue of Burkes Backyard Magazine on the Great Gardening Developments of the 20th Century, Page 57:
SOFT-LEAF BUFFALO GRASS (eg. 'Sir Walter') Old buffalo grass was usually infected with weeds (as you couldn't use sprays on it) and when us kids lay on it, we got red welts on our arms, legs and bums. This was caused by the glass (silica) spines on the leaves. Modern buffalo grasses don't have spines, are much greener, much hardier and are the most shade-tolerant of all general-use lawn grasses. 'Sir Walter' is the best of them.
Extract from Holroyd Council Website:
Sir Walter Buffalo - Why?
Council specified the use of Sir Walter Buffalo to ALL Council nature strip areas in Pemulwuy before the approval of the residential subdivision, back in April 2003.
The main reason being that turf species such as Kikuyu and Couch are highly invasive along creek lines, such as the recently restored Girraween Creek which runs through the Linear Parkland along Driftway Drive.
Sir Walter Buffalo will ensure all the efforts made in restoring the creek are preserved for all new residents to enjoy!
Other benefits of Sir Walter Buffalo include:
- drought tolerance
- requires less mowing (25 per/yr compared to 35 per/yr for Kikuyu)
- less fertilising
- remains green during winter, even with frosts
- more disease resistant
- non-invasive of creek lines
Maintenance
- mow at 40mm in height for best results
- fertilise once in September, December, and March with a slow release organic fertiliser

I am writing to express our sincere thanks for the serivce offered to us by Keith at President Turf.
We purchased our front lawn from PRESIDENT TURF last September and laid it with every good intention, Keith was very helpful as he himself delivered out turf and was more than generous with his time offering as much advice and support as I could ever have hoped for.
The lawn flourished and was the envy of our neighbours, we were delighted with it, then around May this year it started to look sick with bare patched and brown marks, the confusing thing was that it did not take effect on all areas.
After much communication and advice from President, Keith personally assessed our lawn, first fertilizing, with unfortunately no results as he returned and re-laid the effected lawn.
My husband and I believe the service offered by Keith and the staff at President Turf to be a credit to the Sir Walter brand!!
We're happy... the neighbours are happy and we would have no hesitation what so ever in highly recommending the product and service offered by President.
Congratulations on your choice of distributor/grower, Keith is friendly, professional and no dought Sir Walter is as pleased with his performance as we are.
Many thanks for our fabulous lawn!

This is our 3rd home and our 3rd Sir Walter lawn. We are thrilled to bits with its performance. We fertilize it 4 times a year and it out performs most other lawns in the street, especially this year in the drought we have had. We don't water our lawn at all and it still looks better than the others who poor heaps of water on theirs. Thanks for such a good grass.

| Just writing to let you know how happy we are with our Sir Walter Lawn. We have been living in the same house in Tamworth NSW for 26 years. We have very hot and dry summers and freezing winters. We have a big back yard with lots of shade and two small dogs. Over the years we have tried everything from all the seed mixes to cold climate turf and Kikuyu. It's now 2 years since our lawn was installed and it's as good as the day it went in. It does lose colour in the dead of winter, but nothing else we have tried survives more than a couple of years. We are very happy and have recommended your product to many of our friends and neighbours. |

I am a Queensland based turf installer and have been for 12 years. Over that time I have seen the market change many times, from big lawns with little shade to small lawns with big houses and lots of shade. I have laid thousands of square meters of all types of turf including couch, blue couch, soft leaf Buffaloes, Zoysia's, ST's, kikuyu etc. Now when people ask me what's the best for them I tell them simply that it's also what's the best for me to sell. That is the lawn that will be there indefinitely, needs little water and will give me the least comebacks. That answer is Simple. 'Sir Walter'.
Thanks guys. You have made my job easy.

I was a sceptic about using any warm season grasses at all in my local Melbourne market, I have been a landscaper here for 30 years and I had a reputation to uphold, I first laid Sir Walter in my own home in Box Hill in 2001, then I continued to use traditional Tall Fescue and other cool season varieties until now. Melbourne has been without decent rain for almost 2 years and our strict water restrictions make it virtually illegal to water lawns. What I am now noticing after 2 years of drought is that our traditional varieties of lawn are dead everywhere and almost all homes need a new lawn or a major expensive repair, except homes with Sir Walter. Those lawns are still going strong, in my opinion you would be crazy to use anything else nowadays.

I am a greenkeeper and landscaper in Canberra. I have been in business for 8 years. During that time I have worked on many lawns, and have a good understanding of what works in Canberra and what doesnŐt. Unfortunately we have a culture here that exist for reasons I cannot understand, that is itŐs really important to have a green lawn in winter when its way to cold to even think about using it, yet we put up with dead looking lawns in summer when the weather is nice enough to let us enjoy a healthy lawn. The simple facts are if you want a green lawn in winter (Tall Fescue) you will have a lawn that will require 3 times as much water, heaps of chemical fertilizer, insecticide and pesticide just to have a chance of survival. Yet you can have a Sir Walter lawn. Sure it will go browner in our cold winters but you will have a lawn that last indefinitely and you won't have to be an environmental vandal to have a sensible lawn. You won't need a water tank and after establishment you won't have to worry about water restrictions. Your grass is as tough as nails. I cannot understand why you would choose anything else. |

We laid Sir Walter on South facing lawn which is in full deep shade for 7 months of the year - during winter (shaded by the house). It is in it's 3rd year now and looks fabulous. It stays green during winter (admittedly is a little thinner - what can you expect for full shade?), but when the spring sun returns it's is back to it's lush thick qualities. Having said that it is still the greenest lushest grass on our street even in our full shade Winter. We had previously tried Palmetto, and it didn't survive the winter. Our neighbours were so impressed, they too have laid some and it looks great too, even with the presence of their dog.
A turf that truly stands up to it's claims.

I just thought I would drop you a line to say how pleased I am with the Sir Walter grass that I laid just 4 weeks ago.
After several less than successful attempts to grow a good cover of grass in my backyard, and having tired of the dustbowl created by my two dogs who enjoy a bit of a wrestle now and again, I decided to lay the best. My research led me to your product. I laid a test patch in an area that has very rarely seen grass cover in the time I have lived here. To give it a chance against the dogs I laid some chicken wire across the top whilst it got a hold. I tended to it with great care throughout its establishment and after 4 weeks it was so tall that the leaves would no longer support their own weight. I decided to mow it with the mower set to its highest setting. With a bit of an edge trim the attached picture shows the result in that very short time. I intend to continue to care for it for a good while yet while it gains strength and as soon as I can I intend to complete the job and cover the rest of the yard.
I can't wait to see how it goes once the roots get down to a good depth. And my test patch has already spread some good length runners into the bare ground alongside.
I love your stuff

"Just wanted to say how awesome Sir Walter grass is. We originally laid a small amount in a difficult position (shady and unwatered) where the previous lawn had turned to dust with the help of a couple of active dogs. The Sir Walter grass was brilliant and handled it all.
We shortly moved on to a rental house which already had the turf laid. It was in a rural residential area in Brisbane where a bio-cycle constantly watered the lawn. The grass was so lush and grew so much we had to take the water away from it to stop it from growing!
We've since had to relocate to the Adelaide Hills where again we have nothing but bare dirt. Neighbours have told us its pretty much impossible to grow anything here with success but we're confident Sir Walter will do the trick. So with the frustration of the dust getting in the house we're saving our pennies so we can get the best.
We have recommended the grass to so many people but wanted you let you know as well how happy we have been (and hope to be again) with it!" |

| "Its winter performance has been excellent and it has handled the shade better than anything else we've tried up there. I think it's the best buffalo I've worked with, I'm a convert, an enthusiastic advocate, and have already decided to use it in other locations around the course." |

"I can't tell you how happy I am with this lawn. I laid 110m2 to patch in some old garden beds and am well tempted to rip up the rest of the yard!
I read on your site I can cut it back to 15mm which would match it in well with the old turf but I'm yet to be able to get it down that low, as it is I'm cutting it in half each week leaving it at about an inch and a half. Is this just part of the set in stage - it's been down for about 3 months now.
I cut the water back over 3 weeks once the roots had set in (that took two weeks, a mate laid palmetto at the same time and it took a good 6 weeks before we couldn't lift it any more.) On your site you talk about keeping a good 2-3 deep waterings on it until it's 'established' is established for the first year, or just that initial two weeks until the roots take?
PS: Helping some friends lay theirs next week in the christmas break, and my dad is redoing his in January with it - terrific stuff, everyone is very impressed." |

"Last Autumn, I was pleased to receive 110 metres of Sir Walter turf from you. After laying, I rang to let you know how pleased I was with the quality of the turf supplied.
Living in a new subdivision, I have seen quite a few lawns laid recently - none of the turf I have seen comes close to the quality supplied by you. All others I have seen have been sparse, thin strands. Yours was thick and lush.
When I called previously, you invited me to send an email after the new turf had seen its first winter. It is now spring and I am extremely satisfied with Sir Walter.
All the other buffalo in the area went brown or purple over winter. Despite a few frosts, Sir Walter remained active and green. I have had a number of people knock on my door and ask how I kept my lawn so well. Naturally I gave credit to you and your product, but took a little credit myself!
My neighbour will be ordering Sir Walter from you this spring. I am saving to turf my backyard with Sir Walter - how could I use anything else now? I hope to order from you next autumn.
Thank you for your quality product and the great advice in your brochure. For the first time I have a lawn to be proud of!" |

"Just over a year ago I purchased some of your 'Sir Walter' instant buffalo grass for an area in my back yard which is partly shaded by a number of large trees and very dry in summer. I am concerned about water usage and therefore rarely water my lawn. Despite a very active dog and the very dry weather we have experienced in the last year the grass has established itself and is now flourishing.
I write to tell you how delighted I am with your product. I have tried unsuccessfully for may years to grow grass under such difficult conditions and wish that I had discovered your buffalo grass much earlier." |
